Alessandra Rota
battiti per minuto
from 7 to 22 October 2023
The Exhibition
Alessandra Rota was artistically trained in Milan where she also worked in the world of design. Her work is influenced by both Western and Eastern styles such as Japanese ukiyo-e.
She produces bas-relief wall mosaics. She prefers toulipier wood (Magnoliaceae family) which she works and reduces in tile format, giving life to a construction similar to mobile chessboards made up of several superimposed layers. In this exhibition of hers, she also presents works on wood with chisel incisions, connected by a tile that refers to the mosaic.
She works on the monotonal, colors that bring out the vibrations of the shadows thus animating the work.
Her work also has a strong sound value; her structures resonate with harmonic vibrations, so much so that they look like the construction of a musical score. The different size of the individual tiles refers to the amplitude of the sound or the sensation given by the vibration of a body in oscillation. This vibration, which propagates in the air or in another elastic medium, reaches the senses and creates a suggestion related to the nature of the vibration. The tiles transmit the movement to the other nearby tiles and these in turn to still others, causing a local variation of the pressure; in this way, a simple vibratory movement propagates mechanically, originating a sound wave.
The Artist
Alessandra Rota lives and works in Bergamo. She graduated in Milan in 1999 at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts where she approached the world of mosaic. In those same years she collaborated with a photographic studio and a graphic studio.
In the following years she worked in the interior design sector where she developed her own approach to mosaics thanks to the use of wood as a material.
In 2015 she received the "Mosaico Oggi" award on the occasion of the IX International Competition "Mosaico Oggi" in Bracciano (RM).
In 2016 she took part in the first edition of the Fall Design Week in Milan, with an exhibition during the NoLo Public Market event at the Municipal Market.
